A word from Steve Simons,

I recently spent two days on jury duty. This service provided me a little insight into the life of a juror. It was difficult to sit all day, waiting to be called, only to be excused at the end of the second day. However, I heard many comments from other jurors that were profound. While they bemoaned the fact that we were in a “hurry up and wait” mode, they also recognized that our imperfect system which is better than the alternative.

I was asked about “professional jurors” and even doing away with the right to a jury trial in civil cases. I do not believe this is the answer. Why? Because, according to the Los Angeles Superior Court Public Information Office, the “Los Angeles Superior Court is the largest court in the United States." Did you know that there are over 2.7 million new cases filed each year? Of these new cases only about 150,000 are civil. The vast majority are traffic tickets. Since only a small percentage of these civil cases actually result in a jury trial the elimination of the right to a jury trial would have a negligible impact on the overall system.

I believe that a better approach is to have a balance on the Superior Court Bench. Attorneys who desire to become judges must have both civil and criminal experience.

I believe that as a Judge I will use my life's experiences, learned as a Cub Scout, a Boy Scout, playing Little League, serving in the Navy, and as a lawyer to ferret out the evidence - to allow the jury to hear the evidence, to reach a fair and just decision that the People of the County of Los Angeles pay for.

Robert Packwood is quoted as saying that "Judgment comes from experience, and great judgment comes from bad experience." It is from the experience of trial, both the wins and the losses, that attorneys learn their trade and develop the judgment that one day becomes great. I trust that the experience I have had, in the thousands of civil cases I have worked on in the past 21 years, has given me the judgment to be a great Superior Court Judge in Los Angeles County.

I hope you will agree and elect me to serve in Office #72.

Thank you,

Steve Simons
